lir baileys truffle bar

At the beginning of July this year, I found a box of Lir's Baileys Original Irish Cream Truffles (pictures: 1, 2, 3, 4). I haven't been able to gather much about Lir Chocolates, just that they are an Irish chocolate company which was founded in Dublin in 1987 by Mary White and Connie Doody (sources: about page on senatormarywhite.ie; irishtimes.com article - link, screenshot) and which is now a subsidiary of Kinnerton. Of course, I had to try them - I always find chocolate and alcohol combinations almost impossible to resist. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The initial taste of the cream of the cream was fine, but then it just started to taste bad, and that bad taste had got into the outer chocolate as well so I really didn't enjoy anything about them. Then, about a month ago, I found the same thing in a chocolate bar shape - Lir Baileys Original Irish Cream Truffle Bar.

At first, I was a bit usure whether I wanted to try the bar as well. On the one hand, even in spite of any unpleasant experiences I might have had with various alcoholic chocolates, I still find myself attracted towards anything that promises liqueur/ liqueur cream in chocolate. And I was willing to accept that maybe I've just been unlucky with that box. On the other hand, there was the price factor - more expensive than Lindt? Plus the wrapper looked a bit dubious, yellowish, especially the chocolate pictured on it - this is how I would have expected it to look, but it looked... well, just see the pictures that follow.

... and about the Lir Legend...

Lir was a legendary king of Ireland whose four beautiful children were transformed into swans by the sorcery of a jealous stepmother. It is a story of deep mystery, magical powers, poetry, love, beauty and passion which is perfectly embodied in the indulgent experience of Lir Chocolates.

I felt a little better after unwrapping it - the chocolate itself wasn't yellowish. I started sniffing it and memories came back. The bar smelled just like the truffles. And, unfortunately, it tasted just like them. The chocolate would have been fine, it had a nice texture, it was a milky, creamy chocolate. But the cream... There it was, again, the same unpleasant component of the taste. I don't know what it is, I just know I didn't like it.
